For a Better Night’s Sleep

Woman covering her ears with a pillow while man snoresAt Station Square Dental, your lifelong oral health and wellbeing is our top priority. This is why we also offer specialised services such as the treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea. These conditions affect millions of Australians, with some not even being aware of it. If left untreated, health concerns such as sleep apnoea can even become fatal.

Thankfully, you’re in good hands at our practice, as we perform assessments for sleep apnoea during your regular, routine check-ups. Our oral health care professionals evaluate your soft tissues and check for any obstructions that may indicate you have the condition.

What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea involves the closure or collapse of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the body. This can be due to the muscles around the airway becoming too relaxed, the weight of your neck narrowing the airway, or the shape of your nose, neck or jaw. When a patient is suffering from sleep apnoea, they either have breathing that is severely restricted, or stop breathing completely, during sleep. Not only can this condition dramatically impact your health and wellbeing, but it is also linked to serious health concerns such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

What are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnoea?

Often, a person won’t even know that they have sleep apnoea unless their partner notices that they snore, or stop breathing multiple times, during sleep. Other symptoms of sleep apnoea include:

  • Morning headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Frequent night-time urination
  • Teeth grinding
  • Worn, chipped, or broken teeth

How Can We Help You?

As well as focusing on the diagnosis and prevention of sleep apnoea during your routine check-ups, we also provide treatment to ease and manage this condition. If sleep apnoea is suspected, we will refer you for a detailed sleep examination. We can treat mild to moderate sleep apnoea with a Mandibular Advancement Device, a custom-fitted dental appliance which holds the lower jaw forward and supports the airway, keeping it open. Severe sleep apnoea will require a CPAP machine to assist in breathing.
