What is a Dental Implant?

Illustration of dental implantPut simply, a dental implant acts as an artificial root that’s placed in the jaw bone. It closely resembles a titanium screw and consists of three main parts:

  • The implant: the part that is inserted into the jaw serving as the “root” of the new tooth. This is hidden from view.
  • The connector: this links the implant to the crown.
  • The crown: this is the artificial tooth. It is hand-crafted when the implant has healed or “integrated” with the jaw.

The Dental Implant Process

To begin, our dentist will thoroughly assess the site of the implant, before obtaining necessary imaging of your mouth, soft tissues, and jaw bones. This includes a precise 3D scan of the area, from which our dentist can determine the amount and quality of bone present and your suitability for an implant.

When the implant is being surgically placed, it will take between 2–3 hours to complete. During this time, the patient is placed under local anaesthesia to prevent any pain or discomfort. Once placed, the implant is left for approximately 3–6 months before it can receive a crown (artificial tooth). This period allows the implant to fuse with surrounding bone and soft tissue, a process known as osseointegration.

Once ready, a copy of the implant is taken, before a crown is handcrafted and attached to the implant via a specific connector. The implant will look, feel and function just like a natural tooth.
